You walk into a hatshop. and what's the first thing you do? Try on hats, of course. Generally people start with the basic options, like, something in black in the most common style. That's exactly what I did... but that hat didn't suit me. And neither did any of the others. On a whim, I picked up the orange bonnet, put it on, and looked in the mirror.
And it came home with me.
That week, I spent 3 nights after work making my garment. Orange chemise made from a synthetic, orange skirt with gold accents, orange corset of raw silk.
That next weekend I wore my ensemble to the Dickens fair at the SF Cow Palace. I got a lot of compliments on the outfit, but mostly on my bravery for wearing all orange. (for those who don't know, most of the outfits are made of darker colors or more "toned down" colors)
This year, I made a gold jacket to go with it. And Wannabehokage made an orange gentleman's outfit to match.
